Academics at CMS
Coopersville Middle School, a National Schools to Watch designee (2010), serves students in grades 6–8 and offers a wide range of learning opportunities, including music, art, physical education, tech education, and one-to-one computing for every student.
Our well-rounded elective options strengthen the core academic program taught each day. We emphasize respect, cooperation, and strong academics, helping students build the essential skills that support long-term success.
Core Academics
Students take core classes in English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies each day. Lessons focus on building essential skills, developing problem-solving strategies, and supporting steady academic growth.
- Instruction follows Michigan Academic Standards and schoolwide expectations.
- Grades use the district A–F scale with weighted categories for different types of work.
- Homework reinforces class learning and helps students practice responsibility.
Homework, Testing & Assessment
Homework, class assignments, and assessments work together to show student progress. Teachers use a mix of practice opportunities and mastery-level assessments to help students understand where they are in their learning.
- Formative assessments help guide instruction; summative assessments measure mastery of key standards.
- Make-up work, late work, and reassessment follow the procedures outlined in the CMS Student Handbook.
- Academic integrity applies to all classwork, homework, and assessments.
Co-Curriculars & Elective Opportunities
Students explore interests beyond their core classes through a range of co-curricular and elective opportunities. These courses give students hands-on experiences that support creativity, collaboration, and wellness.
- Offerings may include Art, STEM/Technology Education, Music, Physical Education, Family & Consumer Sciences, and introductory World Language.
- Students participate through exploratory rotations and elective options by grade level.
- These experiences help students identify strengths and prepare for future high school pathways.
Accelerated Learning
Some students may be ready for coursework that moves at a faster pace or provides early access to high school credit. These decisions are made carefully to support long-term success.
- Placement is based on readiness and available course options.
- Counselors work with families to plan appropriate academic pathways.
Registration
Course registration takes place each spring as students select classes for the next school year. The CMS counseling team provides step-by-step guidance to help families understand available options.
- Grade-level registration materials are shared with students and families.
- Counselors support planning and placement based on student needs.
- Schedules are finalized before the new school year begins.
Ready to Enroll?
Enrollment for new and returning students is completed through the district’s Enrollment & Registration system. This helps ensure student information is updated and accurate for the school year.
- New families complete district enrollment forms and required documentation.
- Returning families review and update their information as requested by the district.
- The CMS office can assist families with questions about the process.
