Counseling & SEL

Supporting student well-being, belonging, and success.

At Coopersville Area Public Schools, we believe every student deserves to feel safe, supported, and ready to learn. Our school counselors and support staff partner with students, families, and teachers to build strong relationships, teach healthy coping skills, and ensure students have what they need to thrive in school.

We are not a clinical mental health program; instead, we provide school-based support, connection, and guidance — and we help families access additional resources when needed.

School counselors help students with:

  • Building friendships and positive peer relationships
  • Problem-solving and communication skills
  • School adjustment and transitions
  • Goal-setting and academic habits
  • Managing emotions during the school day
  • Accessing additional supports and community resources

Students may reach out on their own, or adults may refer them. Families are welcome to contact their child’s school at any time with concerns.

Social-emotional learning (SEL) at CAPS focuses on helping students:

  • Practice responsibility, respect, and safety
  • Develop self-awareness and confidence
  • Strengthen relationships with peers and adults
  • Make positive choices
  • Feel a sense of belonging in school

This includes schoolwide expectations like Be the Three (Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe) and age-appropriate SEL lessons integrated into daily routines.

Our goal is to support the whole child — academically, socially, and emotionally.

Students can receive support in several ways:

  • Talking with a teacher, secretary, or trusted adult
  • Asking to speak with the school counselor
  • Parent request through the school office
  • Staff referral when concerns arise

Support is confidential, age-appropriate, and focused on helping the student succeed at school.

If a student is in immediate danger or needs urgent support, please contact:

  • OK2SAY — Michigan’s confidential reporting system
  • 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline
  • Local emergency services (911)

These services offer 24/7 assistance for safety concerns, mental health crises, or reports of harm.

Some needs require support beyond general counseling. Families may also access:

  • McKinney-Vento Housing Support
  • Special Education & Student Services
  • Community Assistance Resources (food, clothing, utilities, local support)
  • English Learner & Migrant Education Services

These services help remove barriers so students can fully participate in school.
