McKinney-Vento Homeless Support
If your family is experiencing a change in housing, we’re here to help.
At Coopersville Area Public Schools, we are committed to supporting students and families during times of housing instability. Our priority is ensuring students remain connected to school, even when home is uncertain.
Who Qualifies?
A student may qualify for McKinney-Vento support if they do not have a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. This can include situations such as:
- Staying with friends or relatives due to a change in housing
- Living in a motel, hotel, or campground because other options are not available
- Staying in a shelter or transitional housing program
- Sleeping in a place not meant for long-term housing — such as a car, park, abandoned building, or public space
- Living in housing that is not safe or adequate
- Being part of a migratory family (including seasonal or agricultural work) while living in any of the above situations
If your living situation has changed and you're unsure whether you qualify, please reach out. We will review your circumstances confidentially and help guide your next steps.
What Support Is Available?
Students experiencing homelessness have rights under the McKinney-Vento Act. Eligible students may receive:
- Immediate enrollment, even without records
- Transportation assistance to help maintain school stability
- Access to free school meals
- Help obtaining school supplies and basic needs
- Support joining school programs and activities
- Assistance with transferring records and required documents
- Connections to community programs and resources
These services are designed to remove barriers so students can attend school consistently and successfully.
