Garrett Finds His Path Through MEPP and DeWys Manufacturing

MEPP internship helps Coopersville student build confidence and career skills

When Garrett started the Manufacturing Engineering Partnership Program at Coopersville High School, he expected the class would help him get jobs and recommendations for career paths. When he reached out to DeWys Manufacturing and got the job, he was surprised by the variety of options in manufacturing career paths, let alone under one roof.

Garrett’s experience highlights the value of connecting classroom learning with real-world opportunities. MEPP provides students with early exposure to manufacturing careers, and partnerships with companies like DeWys Manufacturing allow students to explore what those careers look like firsthand.

With this internship through DeWys, students are provided with hands-on learning experiences based on theory and practice in the field as well as soft skill development in interviewing and communication. Internships like Garrett’s are designed not only to teach technical skills, but also to build confidence, professionalism, and workplace readiness.

Something Garrett possesses now, that he did not before, is feeling comfortable in providing a good interview with employers of interest and he has even helped his friends prepare for their interviews. Developing strong communication skills is an important part of career growth, and Garrett’s progress shows how quickly students can improve when given the right support and preparation.

“I was surprised that interviews are not that difficult and I can do a good job with presenting myself,” says Garrett.
